2026 Dodge Durango: The Hellcat Engine Is Back

2025-06-06

Just a few years ago, the end of big, gas-guzzling V8 vehicles seemed inevitable—and yet, here they are, still alive and well. Stellantis has just announced the launch of the 2026 Dodge Durango, and guess what? The legendary Hellcat engine is once again part of the lineup.

We’re talking about a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that delivers a staggering 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. It’s ridiculously thirsty, but it’s also incredibly popular—and that’s exactly why it’s making a return to the market.

Too Loved to Let Go

The ironic thing about the Dodge Durango Hellcat is that its demise has been predicted not once, but twice. The model was originally supposed to be a one-year wonder when it debuted in 2021, but Dodge brought it back for 2023. Last year, the American automaker once again announced that the version would be discontinued after 2025. Goes to show—only fools never change their minds!

In reality, the return of the Dodge Durango Hellcat is mostly due to a shift in leadership and vision at Stellantis. Until recently, the group had turned its back on V8 engines to focus on electrification. That was the dream of former CEO Carlos Tavares. Since his departure, the new leadership has chosen to listen to its customers, which has led to the revival of the HEMI V8. Clearly, Stellantis is undergoing a significant transformation at the moment—but this time, it seems like things are heading in the right direction.

The return of the Hellcat engine isn’t the only good news for the 2026 Dodge Durango. The model also brings a few updates to its various trim packages. The R/T version, for example, now features new wheels and a Blacktop Redline package.
